Stop Chasing Perfect Retakes: Embracing the Raw Energy in Music

Beyond the Piano Roll: Why Your Tracks Don’t Need to Be Perfect

The Mutunet Experiment

I’m currently building an idea for Mutunet, an SNS that helps amateur musicians collaborate online. Alongside coding the architecture, I’ve been role-playing music collaborations on the web to figure out what the platform really needs.

The Trap of Endless Retakes

My biggest headache right now is figuring out how to convince people that their recorded tracks don’t have to be perfect. Matching the pinpoint accuracy of a MIDI piano roll on a real instrument is basically impossible. Going down the rabbit hole of endless retakes to try and reach that level is a trap—one I catch myself falling into too. But this perfectionist mindset creates a huge barrier for anyone wanting to contribute a track.

Rough Takes, Real Energy

From my own experience, a take that sounds a bit rough in isolation often turns into raw energy and drive once it’s mixed with other instruments.

Leading by Example

When Mutunet launches, I plan to publish a few of my own projects and show the whole process of finishing songs with intentionally rough, authentic takes.

Searching for the Right Words

I’d love to put this concept into the right words as well, but the phrasing hasn’t hit me yet. I’m hoping the right words come to mind as Mutunet takes shape.
